Jessa had long before been involved in mental health through advocacy and volunteering within the communities before working as mental health worker at Riverview. Stepping back from the clinical aspect of the profession in healthcare in order to open her time more for counselling, this much more aligns what she is passionate about: Walking alongside and supporting clients in their journey to mental wellness.
Jessa also acts as a contracted Designated Representative with the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada. This involves being appointed for persons appearing before the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada who cannot understand the proceedings due to mental health challenges/mental illness or who are minors.
Her educational credentials result from her desire to work as a counsellor since she was a teen. Her understanding of hope comes from a journey that has helped shape her compassion, understanding and authenticity around many aspects of mental health. Her commitment to the counselling role is something she carries through the counselling sessions and beyond.
"Healing comes from tight knots being unravelled."- Jessa Turner
I work from a person-centered and trauma- informed approach. In my work with you, I draw from different modalities: Narrative Therapy, CBT and Attachment Based Therapy among a few. Through these, I can help you identify how to get into a better space in life in your relationships, your anxiety or perhaps with how to navigate past hurts. Having a safe and trusted space to work through these things is what helps stir the healing process in counselling. This, along with the valuable clinical tools that I bring, used within the session process, can help bring self-awareness within which in turn serves as a grounding base for how to move through. I come into this space not only with my educational credentials but also with years of public mental health advocacy, my own lived experience and authentic knowledge of understanding.
My work in mental health advocacy and volunteering in the community started long before my professional career and education. It has been my longtime passion to walk alongside and support people in their journeys to a calmer state of mind, healthier relationships, and a brighter hope for the future by identifying triggers and learning coping skills together.
If you are finding life challenging in ways or seeking something within but aren't quite sure what, I may be able to help. A gentle support to walk alongside you in your journey to help you discover new strength and awareness which in turn begin the true process of healing within. It will be your process, not mine. However, you won't be alone. I will help you find inner resources, learn skills to cope with your anxiety and work through your triggers. Through the counselling process, you will make valuable connections between your actions and your emotions as we, in turn, learn ways to settle the unrest and triggers that you face.
Making healthy changes in life can be difficult when experiencing depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship issues, job stressors, and other challenges.
My goal is to help you gain a new perspective and provide you with skills to help you move forward in life. I will work collaboratively with you while using tools from different modalities to help you learn to cope with your challenges and stressful situations, working to overcome them. I hope to help you connect with your inner strengths and values, resulting in finding your full potential and connecting with your true self.
Counselling may be a helpful tool in many areas of life for people, especially where struggles may be hindering them from feeling hopeful and happy or even preventing them from feeling a sense of purpose.
Growth through healing and self-awareness/discovery is possible with the help of a trusted counsellor.
I can help with different things by working with you to help you get a better understanding of yourself, and your relationships where needed and helping you to recognize the triggers and their connection to your past where necessary. By doing this we can undo some of the hold your past may have on your life today. In a confidential, safe space we will walk together- I will not be in front of you nor behind you but rather beside you for the journey.
We will go slow and not rush, this is your journey to walk and I am a trusted confidante to help you along your way.
