When you've been holding everything together for too long.
Burnout doesn't always look like falling apart. Sometimes it looks like continuing to work, care for other people, meet the deadlines, and handle everything that needs to be done — while feeling increasingly depleted underneath it all.
We support adults experiencing emotional exhaustion, chronic stress, overwhelm and long-term patterns of overfunctioning.
Meet with one of our counsellors and see whether working together feels like a good fit.
You Keep Going Because You Have To
Burnout often affects people who are used to being capable, responsible, and the person others can rely on.
You may still be working, parenting, caring for other people, managing your responsibilities, and getting through each day. From the outside, it can look like you're handling everything. Inside, however, your emotional and mental capacity may feel increasingly stretched.
Waking Up Already Tired
Sleep happens, but you don't feel genuinely rested or restored.
Operating on Autopilot
You keep completing what needs to be done, but feel increasingly disconnected from yourself while doing it.
Feeling Guilty When You Rest
Slowing down can feel uncomfortable because there's always something else you believe you should be doing.
Mental & Emotional Fatigue
Decisions, conversations, or everyday demands can begin to feel heavier than they used to.
Feeling Numb or Detached
Things you normally care about may start to feel distant, flat, or difficult to engage with.
When you've spent a long time pushing through, recognizing that you're depleted isn't weakness. It may simply be a sign that the way you've been carrying everything is no longer sustainable.
When Slowing Down Isn't Enough
Why Rest Doesn't Always Feel Like Enough
You take the evening off. You sleep in. You finally get a quiet weekend — and somehow, you still don't feel restored.
Sometimes the problem isn't that you haven't rested enough. It's that you've been carrying too much for too long.
When stress has been building for weeks, months, or even longer, a few hours of downtime may not immediately undo the exhaustion that has accumulated.
You might physically stop working while your mind keeps going — thinking about what needs to be done, replaying conversations, planning tomorrow, worrying about other people, or feeling guilty that you're not being productive.
And when life starts again the next morning, you may find yourself returning to the same pace, expectations, responsibilities, and patterns that left you depleted in the first place.
Burnout recovery can involve more than finding time to rest. It can also mean understanding what keeps asking so much of you, noticing the patterns that make it difficult to slow down, and finding ways to protect your energy before you're completely depleted.
If this feels familiar, you don't have to wait until things become unmanageable before talking with someone.

Burnout counselling isn't about teaching you how to become better at tolerating an unsustainable life.
It can be a place to slow things down and look at what's been happening underneath the exhaustion — without another expectation that you need to immediately fix everything.
The Pressure to Keep Performing
Explore the pressure to keep going, achieving and showing up even when you're already exhausted.
Boundaries & Limits
Begin recognizing where your limits are and where boundaries may have become difficult to communicate or protect.
People-Pleasing & Overfunctioning
Notice patterns of taking responsibility for everyone and everything while leaving very little room for your own needs.
What Actually Restores You
Explore what genuinely helps you feel more grounded and restored rather than simply helping you get through another week.
A More Sustainable Way Forward
Begin finding ways of moving through life without expecting yourself to carry everything, all of the time.
Over time, the goal can become less about simply getting through the day and more about building a life where your needs, energy and limits have room to matter too.
Common Questions
Burnout Counselling FAQ
You don't need to be completely burned out before reaching out for support. Here are a few common questions people have when they're considering counselling for burnout and chronic stress.
How do I know if what I'm experiencing is burnout?
Burnout can look different from person to person. You may notice ongoing exhaustion, feeling emotionally drained, difficulty concentrating, irritability, feeling detached, or finding that rest doesn't seem to restore your energy the way it once did.
You don't need to figure out whether your experience perfectly fits a label before seeking support. Counselling can be a place to explore what's been happening and what may be contributing to how you're feeling.
Do I need to stop working or take time off to recover from burnout?
Not necessarily. What is realistic or helpful will depend on your circumstances, the demands you're facing, and how burnout is affecting you.
Counselling can help you look at where changes may be possible — including boundaries, expectations, workload, relationships, coping patterns, and how you're using the energy you currently have.
What happens in burnout counselling?
Burnout counselling isn't about giving you another list of things you should be doing. Sessions can give you space to understand the pressures you're carrying, recognize patterns that may be contributing to exhaustion, and explore changes that feel realistic for your life.
Your counsellor may also help you work with areas such as stress, boundaries, people-pleasing, perfectionism, overfunctioning, emotional overwhelm, and reconnecting with your own needs.
