The goal isn’t to never think deeply.
It’s to feel less trapped by the thinking.

RECOGNIZING THE LOOP
Overthinking often begins with the hope that one more thought,
one more review, or one more piece of reassurance will finally
make you feel certain.
Instead, your mind may keep circling the same question without
reaching a conclusion that feels settled enough.
01
THE PAST
You revisit what you said, what they said, what their tone
meant, and whether you should have responded differently.
“Why did I say that? Did that sound weird?”
02
DECISIONS
Even after making a decision, you may continue comparing
alternatives and wondering whether another choice would
have been better.
“What if I made the wrong decision?”
03
THE FUTURE
Your mind may move quickly toward possible problems,
consequences, or worst-case scenarios before anything
has actually happened.
“But what if something goes wrong?”
04
CERTAINTY
You may keep researching, analyzing, asking others, or
reviewing your options because you don’t yet feel certain
enough to move forward.
“I just need to think about it a little more.”
05
PREPARATION
You may rehearse conversations, anticipate different
reactions, or plan for multiple possibilities in an effort
to prevent being caught off guard.
“If they say this, then I’ll say that…”
06
MENTAL LOAD
Even when there is nothing you need to solve right now,
your mind may continue searching, reviewing, planning,
or worrying.
“Why can’t my brain just let this go?”
THE OVERTHINKING PARADOX
Sometimes the search for complete certainty becomes the
very thing that keeps you feeling uncertain.

Your mind may be trying to protect you by finding certainty
before you allow yourself to move forward.
UNDERSTANDING THE PATTERN
If you’ve ever told yourself to “just stop thinking about it,”
you’ve probably discovered that overthinking rarely responds
well to being ordered to disappear.
Often, the thinking has a purpose. Your mind may be trying to
prevent a mistake, anticipate a problem, understand something
that felt uncomfortable, or find enough certainty to finally
feel safe making a decision.
What begins as an attempt to solve a problem can become a loop
when your mind keeps searching for certainty that may not
actually be available.
01
Decisions may feel unusually high-stakes when making
a mistake feels difficult to tolerate.
02
Thinking through every possibility can feel like a way
to reduce uncertainty, even when it ultimately creates
more questions.
03
Worry, high expectations, self-criticism, or pressure
to make the “right” choice can make it harder to let
a question remain unresolved.
There isn’t one reason people overthink.
Counselling can help you understand what keeps your
particular thought patterns going without assuming
every person’s experience has the same explanation.

HOW COUNSELLING CAN HELP
Counselling can create space to understand your thought
patterns without requiring you to analyze them even more.
Together, we can explore what keeps you feeling stuck and
develop ways of responding that feel more grounded,
flexible, and sustainable.
01
Learn to notice when useful reflection has shifted into
repetitive worry, rumination, or mental replay.
02
Practise moving forward without needing every possible
question, outcome, or uncertainty resolved first.
03
Develop ways of noticing worry without automatically
following every thought, possibility, or fear it creates.
04
Explore the pressure to make the “right” choice, avoid
mistakes, or feel completely certain before taking action.
05
Build grounding and mindfulness skills that can help
shift attention away from endless mental replay and
back toward what is happening now.
06
Spend less time searching for perfect certainty and
more time trusting your ability to make decisions,
adjust, and respond as life unfolds.
THE GOAL ISN’T TO STOP THINKING
You don’t have to solve every thought, predict every outcome,
or feel completely certain before you can move forward.
MORE SPACE BETWEEN YOU AND THE THOUGHT
Change doesn’t necessarily mean your mind becomes completely
quiet. It can mean that every thought no longer requires an
answer, a solution, or your immediate attention.
01
DECISIONS
Having less need to repeatedly reopen a choice,
reconsider every alternative, or search for reassurance
after you’ve already made a decision.
02
UNCERTAINTY
Becoming more able to tolerate uncertainty without
immediately needing to analyze, research, check, or
solve what you don’t yet know.
03
THOUGHTS
Recognizing that having a thought doesn’t automatically
mean you need to investigate it, believe it, solve it,
or act on it.
04
THE PRESENT
Spending less time mentally revisiting the past or
preparing for every possible future — and having more
space to be present in your actual life.
You can be thoughtful, reflective, and careful
without being consumed by your thoughts.
OUR APPROACH
Counselling isn’t about telling you to “think positively”
or simply asking you to stop worrying.
We take a collaborative, compassionate, and trauma-informed
approach to understanding what your overthinking may be trying
to accomplish, what keeps the cycle going, and what may help
you respond differently.
Your counselling is shaped around your experiences, your goals,
and what feels meaningful to you. Rather than treating every
thought as a problem to solve, we can explore ways of creating
more flexibility in how you respond to what shows up in your mind.

COMMON QUESTIONS
You don’t need to know exactly why you overthink
or have everything figured out before reaching out.
It may be worth exploring when your thoughts regularly
interfere with sleep, concentration, decision-making,
relationships, your ability to relax, or leave you feeling
mentally exhausted. You don’t need to relate to every sign
of overthinking for counselling to be helpful.
Counselling can help you identify what keeps your particular
thought loops going, recognize triggers, and develop different
ways of responding to worry, uncertainty, and self-doubt.
The goal isn’t necessarily to eliminate difficult thoughts,
but to feel less controlled by them.
Not necessarily. Overthinking can occur alongside anxiety,
but it may also be connected with perfectionism, uncertainty,
self-doubt, stress, relationship concerns, or other experiences.
Counselling gives us space to understand what may be contributing
to the pattern for you.
Replaying a conversation can be an attempt to understand
what happened, check whether you made a mistake, figure out
what someone else may have thought, or find reassurance that
everything is okay. It can become exhausting when no amount
of reviewing seems to provide an answer that feels settled.
Trueself Counselling offers in-person counselling in
Coquitlam and Victoria, as well as virtual counselling
throughout British Columbia. You can also begin with a
free 20-minute consultation to see whether a counsellor
