NAVIGATING CHANGE
Sometimes life changes suddenly.
Other times, the life you've built simply stops fitting the person you've become.
A relationship ends. A career no longer feels meaningful. Children grow up and move away. Retirement approaches. Your health changes. Or you simply realize that the life you're living doesn't feel the way you expected it to.
You may feel uncertain about the future, disconnected from yourself, overwhelmed by decisions, or unsure of where your life is heading next.
At Trueself Counselling, we provide life transitions counselling in Coquitlam, BC for adults navigating change, uncertainty, loss, and new chapters in their lives.
You don't need to know exactly what comes next. Counselling can give you space to understand where you are now — and begin discovering where you want to go from here.
WHEN THINGS LOOK FINE FROM THE OUTSIDE
Not everyone going through a difficult life transition looks like they're struggling.
You may still be going to work, taking care of your family, managing responsibilities, and doing everything that needs to be done.
But inside, you may not feel like yourself anymore.
You might replay decisions over and over. Question choices that once felt certain. Grieve a version of your life you thought would last. Or wonder why everything feels harder when, from the outside, things seem “fine.”
Counselling gives you space to slow down, understand what you're feeling, and reconnect with yourself without having to have all the answers first.
UNDERSTANDING THE UNCERTAINTY
Major life changes affect more than our circumstances. They can shift our identity, confidence, relationships, routines, and the way we imagined our future would look.
During a life transition, you may experience:
It can be easy to interpret these feelings as a sign that you're handling the transition badly.
But change creates uncertainty — and uncertainty can be deeply uncomfortable. When the future feels unclear, your mind may try to create certainty by analyzing every possibility, replaying decisions, planning ahead, or questioning whether you're making the “right” choice.
Sometimes the more desperately you try to figure everything out, the more stuck you feel.
Counselling can help you step out of that cycle, understand what the uncertainty is bringing up for you, and begin making decisions from a place of greater clarity rather than fear.
LIFE CHANGES LOOK DIFFERENT FOR EVERYONE
There is no single type of change that “counts” as a life transition. Sometimes it's something you chose. Sometimes it's something that happened to you. And sometimes nothing dramatic has happened at all — you simply know that the way you've been living no longer feels right.
Career changes, job loss, workplace stress, burnout, retirement planning, or questioning whether your current path still feels meaningful.
Major shifts in routine, identity, purpose, and daily life after children become independent or work comes to an end.
Navigating grief, uncertainty, loneliness, and rebuilding life after significant relationship changes.
Adjusting to illness, injury, chronic pain, disability, or a medical diagnosis that affects daily life and future plans.
Exploring your values, priorities, direction, and the growing sense that something in your life needs to change.
Making space for the loss of a loved one, a relationship, your health, a role you once held, or a future you once imagined.
THE SPACE BETWEEN WHAT WAS AND WHAT'S NEXT
Often, the hardest part of a transition isn't simply what happened.
It's everything that comes after.
What happens next?
Who am I now?
What do I actually want?
Am I making a mistake?
What if I regret my decision?
How do I let go of what I thought my life would look like?
These questions don't always have quick answers.
Counselling gives you space to explore them without pressure — to separate what you truly want from fear, expectations, guilt, or what you believe you should want.
You don't have to have your next chapter figured out before you're allowed to begin it.
01 YOUR COUNSELLING SPACE
What we focus on will depend on what you're experiencing, what matters to you, and where you feel most stuck.
Anxiety, overthinking, and self-doubt
Grief and loss
Personal values and priorities
Identity and sense of purpose
Relationship patterns and boundaries
Confidence in difficult decisions
Stress and emotional overwhelm
Creating a meaningful path forward
The goal isn't to make every decision feel certain.
It's to help you understand yourself well enough that you can move forward even when certainty isn't possible.
02 OUR APPROACH
You don't need someone to tell you what you “should” do with your life.
You may need somewhere you can say the things you haven't been able to say out loud, explore the parts of you that want different things, and understand why certain decisions feel so difficult.
Our counsellors take a compassionate, collaborative, and trauma-informed approach. Depending on the counsellor you work with and what you need, therapy may draw from evidence-informed approaches to help you understand patterns, process difficult emotions, clarify your values, and develop practical ways of moving through change.
03 RELATED SUPPORT
A major life change rarely affects just one part of your life. You may also notice anxiety, exhaustion, changes in confidence, difficulty setting boundaries, or emotions that feel harder to manage than they used to.
Depending on what you're experiencing, you may also find these areas helpful:
